Youth, adults, and families are invited to join us for a fun day of community engagement and service as we work together to make Lake Mendocino a cleaner, greener place! Our goal is to help keep Lake Mendocino free of tobacco product waste, including cigarette butts and other tobacco and vaping waste, while beautifying and protecting our natural environment.
Beyond the cleanup, this event will help bring greater attention to the environmental harms of tobacco product waste and help us better understand the scope of the problem in our community. During the event, we will collect baseline data on tobacco product waste found at Lake Mendocino, including the amount, types, brands, and number of tobacco products and related waste items collected. This information will help document the extent of tobacco product waste and establish a baseline for measuring changes over time following implementation of the Eliminate Tobacco Products to Address Tobacco Waste policy.
Clean Soil. Clean Waterways. Healthy Communities. Come spend the day outdoors, connect with your community, and make a positive impact on one of our local natural spaces. Every piece of tobacco waste we remove helps create a cleaner environment for people, wildlife, and future generations.
Meeting location: Pomo A, located at the North end of Lake Mendocino.
Bring your family, bring a friend, and help us make a difference—one piece of litter at a time!
In October Partners is presenting a show of large acrylic paintings by Virginia Sharkey called “Terra.” She says:
“My subject is what underlies us on this physical plane: what holds us up. It may be called earth, duff, dust, clods, muck or the stuff under our feet. or as scientists say: ‘This is not dirt: it is a living organism called soil.’ At any rate, these paintings are explorations and metaphors for what’s underneath us, our ground and the idea of growth.”
The show opens October 8 and continues through November 9.There’s a Second Saturday Meet the Artist October 10, 5-7pm.
Hours are Thursday - Monday, 11 am to 4 pm
Think activism in Mendocino started with the hippies in the '60s? Think again! Mendocino boasts a long history of political and social activism, and the Kelley House Museum’s latest exhibit showcases the powerful art that has demanded change across the eras. Marvel at the artistry behind historic posters for women’s suffrage, the Whale War boycott, and the Peace Fair. Have a laugh at the anti-war napkin art of the ’60s or feel the raw weight of the hand-drawn signs from today’s protest marches. This exhibit also features striking pieces from contemporary local creators, such as the story of Coyote depicted in Jewelina Acosta’s wall-sized painting. We are also proud to display incredible loaned works from Eric Wilder, Winsor Kinkade, Kiera Poehlmann, David Bacon, Lillian Galedo, Gerri Sorkin, John Hewitt, and more.Mendocino artists don't just paint history – they shape it! View where we’ve been, feel the passion of the fight, and get inspired to use your voice, your markers, or your paintbrush to demand the change you wish to see in the world. This exhibit was co-curated by Averee McNear, Kelley House Museum Curator, and Dav Bell, Mendocino Art Center Executive Director.
