The job is 20 hours a week at our studios in Philo. You must be a quick learner, with basic clerical skills, and computer literacy including spreadsheets. Duties include data entry, direct mailings, phone calls and emails with members, and helping with fundraising drives. Hours are flexible. It’s even better if you are bilingual in Spanish.
Community Radio inland corridor advertising sales representative
Mendocino County Public Broadcasting, which broadcasts KZYX FM radio across Mendocino county and parts of Lake, Humboldt and Sonoma counties, is accepting applications for the position of underwriting/advertising sales representative, targeting the inland corridor (Ukiah, Willits, Laytonville, Hopland, Lake County, etc).
The successful candidate will have the capacity to prospect, recruit, sign and maintain underwriting/advertising customers in compliance with Federal Communications Commission restrictions on public radio messaging, and work with these underwriters to copywrite effective, appropriate messages for broadcast on KZYX Radio and the KZYX website. The inland sales rep will report to the general manager, and consult with the underwriting director, operations director, membership director, program director and bookkeeper to ensure underwriting contracts are properly executed to the clients' expectations. Over time, the inland sales rep will learn to perform other underwriting and promotional tasks, including ad traffic, scripting, spot scheduling and log preparation, and participate in station marketing, community outreach, public event and other community activities. Hours are flexible and will be focused on meeting prospects, understanding their objectives, needs and concerns, and communicating the value and importance of community radio to the prospect's communications strategy.
Four-year college degree is strongly encouraged but not a requirement. Strong writing and language skills and quantifiable computer skills required (Google G Suite, Windows and/or Apple). Should have basic knowledge of working in information databases, particularly broadcast traffic/scheduling or similar. Strong interpersonal and communications skills are a must. Experience in community/public/non-profit radio is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will receive a base salary plus commission for both new and renewal contracts, with bonuses for achieving agreed annual performance targets. Deadline to apply is 8 June 2018.
KZYX is Community Public Radio for all of Mendocino County and beyond. KZYX is an NPR affiliate, and also provides content from APM, PRX, PRI and independent providers, along with local public affairs and music programming broadcast in Mendocino and surrounding counties. KZYX is located in beautiful Philo, Calif., in the heart of the redwoods in Anderson Valley. A short drive to ocean beaches, mountains, lakes and wineries as well as a vibrant music scene, year-round farmers’ markets and a state-of-the-art Community Health Center.
We maintain two full transmitters and one translator to cover as much of the county as we can. We are non-profit and non-commercial radio. Our financial support comes primarily from our listeners/members and our community. KZYX local programming is created and produced primarily by volunteers in Mendocino County.
