UKIAHAIKU FESTIVALUkiah Civic Center
The 22nd Annual ukiaHaiku Festival will return to the Ukiah Civic Center on Sunday, April 28 from 2-4 p.m. As we return to a traditional contest format, we invite the community to celebrate the wonder and capacity of haiku through Ukiah’s palindrome with readings and live music. Prizes will be awarded for 10 categories, from Kindergarten through 12th grades and adults, including the International Jane Reichhold Award. Winners are invited to attend the ukiaHaiku Festival to read their haiku.
In recognition that the Pomo people are the original inhabitants of this area and that the word Ukiah itself is from the Pomo languages, we made an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku in Pomo languages or that express a Pomo perspective. Four poems have been selected to be read at the festival. There will also be two returning performances — shakuhachi music by Karl Young and classic feel-good ukulele covers by the Uketones. This year’s festival was made possible in part by a grant for youth outreach from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and supported by North Coast Opportunities.
The ukiaHaiku Festival is also sponsored in part by the Ukiah Branch of the Mendocino Library, the Grace Hudson Museum, Mendocino Book Company, City of Ukiah (Ukiah Civic Center), Wave Books, Tsadik, Schat's Bakery, and the Arts Council of Mendocino County. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact carrm@mendocinocounty.gov or visit the ukiaHaiku website at http://ukiahaiku.org

Inland Valley Women’s Chorus is hosting a Community SONGFEST to celebrate its 30th Anniversary! Everyone welcome!
During the SONGFEST, chorus members will share some of their tried-and-true harmony favorites interspersed with easy-to-learn singalongs. Cake and munchies provided.
Inland Valley Women’s Chorus is a group of women who love to sing together. Our repertoire comes from a variety of traditions and includes songs about women, peace, justice, harmony with nature, healing, and inspiration. Some are familiar, some international. Many pieces have been written by the group’s own members, friends, and contemporary songwriters.
Inland Valley Women’s Chorus (IVWC) was founded by Judy Fjell in the fall of 1993. Some of the original members are still singing in the chorus! Madge Strong has been the director since 1997.
During many of its thirty years, IVWC has hosted either a yearly concert or a chorus invitational, as well as a Winter Solstice Community Sing for Peace. The chorus has also sung many times over the years for various organizations and events, from Project Sanctuary and elder care facilities to Women’s History Day, World AIDs Day, and Martin Luther King Day. During the pandemic years, we managed mainly with Zoom and an occasional gathering in a park. Now, we are singing together mostly for our own joy and inspiration at our weekly meetings, summer potlucks, and our annual retreat.
IVWC sings together in person every Thursday from 6–7:30 pm at Holy Trinity Church, 640 S. Orchard (Mary & Martha Room) in Ukiah. If you have an interest in joining IVWC, contact Madge at 707-459-1493 or mstrong@willitsonline.com.
Please join us in our SONGFEST to celebrate our 30th Anniversary!
