    October 14, 2024 — Voters in the Albion Little River area will cast their ballots this November on Measure S, a proposal to increase funding for the Albion Little River Fire Protection District through a new parcel tax.

    September 25, 2024 — The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution last week that will allow the county to use $7 million of Measure B funds to construct the behavioral health wing at the Mendocino County Jail. The resolution states that the county must replenish Measure B funds in 10 years including an interest rate of 2.5% at a yearly repayment schedule. The proposal was voted on 4-1, with 5th District Supervisor Ted Williams voting against it, arguing that he supported the concept of the plan but not the interest rate. Williams says that because of the added costs of the interest and repayment plan, there won’t be sufficient funds to construct a substance abuse center in Ukiah.

    September 18, 2024 — At last Tuesday’s meeting, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to keep current limits on cannabis density unchanged. In doing so, the supervisors rejected a proposal to reinterpret the original cannabis ordinance to allow larger commercial cannabis sites.

The competitive herding event dates back to the 1860s in both New Zealand and Wales, but the exact origin is unclear. The sport gained popularity and eventually spread to Australia and other countries worldwide.The Redwood Empire Region of Northern California developed this specific kind of sheepdog trial in the 1940s due to Mendocino County’s rough terrain.

    August 8, 2024 — A group of Redwood Valley residents are hoping to build a community recreation center at the old Redwood Valley School Campus.The Ukiah Recreation Center, which the City of Ukiah Recreation Department manages, serves hundreds of children every day. Students from Ukiah Unified elementary schools are bussed to the center to participate in the Boys and Girls Club. The Family Resource Center provides free bilingual programs for toddlers and their parents. Recreation centers can also help young people discover healthy and safe ways to have fun in their communities.Because of a decline in student enrollment, the Ukiah Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to close the Redwood Valley campus in 2010.The next step is for Ukiah Unified to get a waiver from the California State Board of Education.The next Ukiah Unified Board of Trustees meeting is on Thursday, August 8th. It starts at 6:30 pm at 511 South Orchard Avenue in Ukiah.
