Save Our Signal!
After almost 35 years of community service, KZYX’s signal is threatened by tree growth between the station’s main studios in Philo and the transmitter on Cold Springs Mountain. We must move the station to continue to operate.
A New Era for KZYX
We have purchased property at 390 West Clay Street in the center of Ukiah, the county seat. With two buildings on one half-acre we can upgrade our facilities, and our location in the county seat will give us better access to news sources.
Our new headquarters, complete with new broadcasting equipment, will keep our community connected, facilitating communication and connection around the many important issues we face and allowing us to serve the diverse population of our county.
KZYX AWARDED a $300K grant from National Endowment for Humanities (NEH)
We have met the match for the NEH grant. Thank you to all donors, big and small!
The NEH grant and match will certainly get us further down the road, but we are by no means coasting towards the finish line just yet. Together we can make this vital move a reality.
What is the NEH Grant?
KZYX has received a $150,000 Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant requires a 100% community match in partnership for the project and you delivered! Thank You.
The early investments of nearly 1,000 people have already given a head start to this campaign, with gifts totaling $580,000+ toward the total goal of $2 million. These funds allowed the station to complete project planning, providing a sturdy foundation for the major donor campaign now underway.
What KZYX Means to Mendocino County
Every minute of every day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year KZYX, Mendocino County’s public radio station, is on the air. We are Mendocino County’s source for NPR, for daily local news, public affairs, and arts and music produced and curated by community volunteers. We provide public service announcements from local nonprofits and local governments and timely, reliable emergency information during wildfires, pandemics, and other disasters. And, when the power goes out, KZYX is there for you, broadcasting essential information in both Spanish and English.
KZYX reaches into every corner of our vast county, using three transmitters covering nearly 4,000 square miles of sprawling mountains, valleys and towns. And the station’s four studios — in Fort Bragg, Willits, Talmage and Philo — allow access to producers and guests in all areas of the county. KZYX also provides live streaming, archives, podcasts and our new phone app.
All of these services are free, with more than 2,000 members, 120 volunteer programmers, and 100+ local underwriters voluntarily supporting this singular community resource. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting provides only 17 percent of our total operating budget—the rest is up to us.
In the Word of Our Listeners
During recent fires and disasters in Mendocino County, KZYX has been a trusted partner and available to the Sheriff’s Office . . . This availability and immediate response in assisting the Sheriff’s Office can potentially assist us in saving lives.
—Sheriff Matt Kendall, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office
You were my lifeline out on the Lost Coast (Sinkyone Wilderness State Park) last month. No cell service, no internet, but your signal came through. Thanks for keeping me company and up-to-date on the world.
— KZYX Member
Real fact-based local and national news is not easy to find these days, but we in Mendocino County are fortunate! We have KZYX to rely on—not only for news, but also for timely and accurate information during emergencies, including the coronavirus pandemic. KZYX also offers the community a spectrum of music and other cultural programming as well.
— Mari Rodin, Ukiah City Councilmember
