August 18, 2025 - The family of Danilla Sands needs our help. You may know Danilla or of her, because she is the person who helps keep us all safe by tirelessly posting about Emergency Alerts in real time via Mendocino Action News. Danilla's mom, Deanna R.C., a longtime foster parent and local volunteer, is now facing the total loss of her home and belongings after a fire destroyed the property she had lived in since 2002. In the face of the tragedy, her daughter, Danilla, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help her mother, who she says "has spent her entire life helping others without ever asking for help for herself."
When the fire broke out, Deanna’s immediate actions saved two lives. She safely evacuated two special-needs adults from the smoke-filled home—one she was caring for and the other her adopted child, who has mobility challenges.
"She kept them low to the ground under the smoke to prevent inhalation and then used a laundry hamper to roll them out of the house and into safety," Sands wrote in a heartfelt plea for community support. "Her quick thinking and bravery saved lives."
While the three escaped, the loss was immense. Deanna lost her chickens, turkeys, two dogs, and a kitten in the blaze. The family was relieved to later see their outdoor cat had survived.
For decades, Deanna has been a pillar of support in the community. She was a foster parent for 25 years, ran a daycare for 14 years, and for the last decade, has operated a free clothing exchange to ensure local children had clothes and shoes for school. Her daughter recalled how she frequently organized fundraisers for other families in need and even donated to the Disaster Resource Center to help previous fire survivors.
"When someone in need called, she was always there," Danilla said.
The community has already begun to rally around the family. "The kindness we’ve received today—from friends, family, and complete strangers—has been overwhelming," Sands shared. "My mother lost her home and animals today in Redwood Valley, and while we are heartbroken, we are also deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support."
The GoFundMe campaign was created to help Deanna with immediate needs as she begins what is expected to be a long and difficult recovery process. All funds will go directly to her and her family.
