Service to Eliminate Cell Phone Dead Zones

July 29, 2025 - In a significant move to end mobile dead zones, Starlink has partnered with T-Mobile to launch its "Direct to Cell" satellite service, which promises to bring connectivity to the most remote corners of the United States. The service uses a new generation of Starlink satellites to connect directly with standard smartphones, offering text, voice, and data where traditional cell towers cannot reach.

The technology eliminates the need for specialized hardware or new phones. Using modified Starlink satellites that function as floating cell towers, a user's existing smartphone will automatically switch to the satellite network when it loses terrestrial cellular signal.

The goal is ubiquitous coverage. This enhances, rather than replaces, existing cellular networks, ensuring you can stay connected whether you're hiking a remote trail or driving through a rural valley.

The initial phase of the service will focus on text messaging, including SMS, MMS, and support for messaging apps. Crucially, this includes the ability to send text messages to 911 in emergencies, providing a vital lifeline in areas previously without any service. Plans are in place to expand capabilities to include voice calls and data in the near future.

While the service promises seamless connectivity, performance will depend on a clear view of the sky, though it is designed to work from a user's pocket or inside a vehicle. Data speeds will be limited initially but are expected to improve as the satellite constellation is built out.

How to Sign Up and What It Costs

The cost of the service will vary. For T-Mobile customers on the "Experience Beyond" plan, the service will be included at no extra cost. New subscribers to the "Experience More" plan will receive the service free through the end of 2025. For all other T-Mobile customers, the service will cost $10 per month per line "for a limited time."

Customers of other carriers, such as Verizon and AT&T, will be able to sign up, but it will cost $10 per month per line.
