July 9, 2025 - The Anderson Valley Food Bank in Boonville has issued an urgent public appeal for community support, citing a perfect storm of rising food costs, increased demand for services, and a drop in both public and private donations.
Organizers report that the Food Bank, a critical lifeline for many local families, seniors, and farm workers, is facing one of its most challenging periods. The number of household seeking assistance has reportedly increased by nearly 20% over the past six months. This surge is attributed to the escalating cost of basic necessities, like groceries and gas, which is straining household budgets throughout the rural valley. Simultaneously, the Food Bank is grappling with a significant increase in its own operational expenses.
The cost of purchasing supplemental food to meet the demand has risen sharply. Furthermore, a key grant funding that the organization relied on during and immediately after the pandemic has not been renewed at previous levels, creating a substantial budget shortfall.
In their appeal, food bank coordinators are asking for monetary donations, which they say are the most effective way to help. Cash allows them to purchase specific high-need items in bulk at lower cost. They are also a need of non-perishable food items, with a particular emphasis on canned proteins like tuna, chicken, and beans, peanut butter, pasta, and rice, cereal and oatmeal.
Volunteers are also needed to help with sorting donations and assisting with distribution days.
The Anderson Valley Food Bank is at the Anderson Valley Grange every second and fourth Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:30pm. You can get more information at www.andersonvalleyfoodbank.org
