An American flag adorns the grave Norman Leroy Mallory, a private first class who served with the U.S. Army in Korea in Rose Memorial Park in Fort Bragg.

On Memorial Day, families gathered in cemeteries across the nation and Mendocino County to honor fallen service members. Frank Hartzell, editor and publisher of the Mendocino Coast News, attended the remembrance ceremony in Fort Bragg and continues to chronicle the stories of local veterans.

"The service was a very powerful five minutes of remembrance," Hartzell said. " A prayer, gun salute and taps. The power was in the place, all the flags of those who served and came back to live long lives here on the Mendocino Coast."

Hartzell published a video of the service on mendocinocoast.news. He has also profiled a number of men who died serving overseas, including Clyde Lucas, Billy Sandefur, and Norman and Earl Iverson.
