Mendocino County sheriffs deputies respond to requests for welfare checks in Mendocino County

Two men were arrested in separate incidents in Fort Bragg and Little River late last week after welfare checks led law enforcement to uncover violent crimes, authorities said.

In Fort Bragg, police arrested 67-year-old Christopher Grewer on Friday, March 28, after responding to a welfare check at a residence on the 100 block of Ebbing Way around 4 p.m. Officers said they heard a woman screaming from inside the locked home, along with a man’s voice attempting to silence her and keep her from reaching the door.

Due to the escalating situation, officers forced entry and arrested Grewer after a brief struggle. Investigators said they found evidence that Grewer had allegedly assaulted and strangled the victim with an electrical cord on three separate occasions. He faces multiple charges including attempted murder, false imprisonment, and violation of a court order.

The day prior, on Thursday, March 27, deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office responded to a similar welfare check around 10:50 p.m. in the 41000 block of Little River Airport Road in Little River.

According to Captain Quincy Cromer, a concerned neighbor reported hearing possible gunshots and was unable to reach an elderly female resident by phone. Deputies contacted 58-year-old Ignacio Andrade-Zamora at the home. After allowing deputies inside, authorities said they found evidence that a firearm had been discharged inside the residence.

An 84-year-old woman was discovered in an upstairs bedroom. Cromer described the woman and Andrade-Zamora as roommates. Andrade-Zamora was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
