Helping Fire Survivors In Redwood Valley

Aug 15, 2018 -- There is a 2,500 square foot warehouse in Redwood Valley, where volunteer Danilla Sands has been organizing aid for fire survivors from two seasons' worth of conflagrations. The center is an homage to Sands' friend, Margaret Stephenson, who passed away in last year's blaze. Today, it is humming with life, as volunteers, survivors, and donors come by to find whatever they need, from dish soap or specialty dog food to friendship and healing.

August 15, 2018 -- A few days after the Ranch Fire broke out, cannabis cultivators at Heartrock Mountain Farm, at the top of Pine Avenue in Potter Valley, raced to put out spot fires and douse burning trees along the firebreaks dug by CalFire. three of the people who were there tell their story.

A New Art Form At Grace Hudson Museum

August 15, 2018 -- The Wild Gardens at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah have a new sculpture. It's a large steel fish trap, modeled after the woven and interwoven baskets used by indigenous people along the Russian River. Artists Bruce Smith and Kendra McKee are auto machinists by trade. They built a new set of tools and figured out a whole new way to operate as they created this one-of-a-kind piece, based on an ancient art form.

On Monday night, CalFire representatives and local officials, announced a firefighter from Utah has died while fighting in an active fire zone on the Ranch Fire. Utah officials have identified the firefighter as Matthew Burchett, a battalion chief from Draper – near Salt Lake City. 


University of California Hopland Research and Extension Center

About two-thirds of the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center was burned as the River Fire moved onto the 5,358 acre ranch. All homes and structures were saved along with the ranch animals thanks to the efforts of staff, neighbors, CAL FIRE and the Hopland Fire Protection District.
