Sheriff Matt Kendall says that, while calls for service are declining, there's an uptick in the severity of the crimes being committed. Physicall assaults are up 20%, child abuse is up 36%, and physical domestic violence has increased by 25%, though verbal domestic abuse has declined by 14%. With the physical operations of the court locked down, there are more deputies on patrol, which he thinks makes them more accessible. Some of the deputies at the jail have been tested for COVID-19, but their results have come back negative.
In this interview, Kendall discusses all this, the increase in suicides, and why he thinks it's important to keep following the public health officer's orders to continue sheltering in place.
