GRI General Meeting 1/28 - Guest Speaker on the Utility Tax and Solar Rights
Dear GRI Friends,
We are pleased to invite you to the GRI General Meeting on January 28th at noon. We will be joined by guest speaker Cailey Underhill, Advocacy & Development Director with the grassroots nonprofit Solar Rights Alliance. She will speak with us about the looming Utility Tax and how we can stop it. Details are below, and we hope to see you there!
Quick background on the Utility Tax:
Last year, the Legislature passed a law (AB 205) that would add a Utility Tax to everyone’s electricity bill. This Utility Tax is uncapped, with unlimited potential to grow.
Now the utilities and some organizations are proposing the highest Utility Tax in the country—between $30-70 / month for any non-CARE or FERA ratepayer, just for being hooked up to the grid.
The Utility Tax proposals will increase utility bills for millions of working people across California. The proposals will hit particularly hard on people who live in apartments or homes that use less electricity.
The Utility Tax will discourage all forms of energy conservation, such as turning off the lights, putting in new windows, or installing solar panels. Even a Utility Tax of $30/month will harm millions of working people and the environment.
Our legislators voted to create this mess, and now they need to fix it before state regulators make a final decision early next year. More than 210 organizations have called on the state legislature to repeal it, and you can make a difference by urging the legislature to reverse their decision. Join us for more information:
