African Art Lecture at the Willits Center for the Arts

The Willits Center for the Arts is pleased to present a lecture on African art on Thursday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will take place at the Willits Center for the Arts and will be delivered by Art Historian Gary Martin, M.A.
This lecture offers an introduction to the richness and diversity of African art, emphasizing its historical depth, regional variety, and cultural significance. From ancient sculptural traditions to contemporary artistic practices, the presentation will examine how African art functions as a visual language shaped by ritual, community, belief systems, and historical exchange. Particular attention will be given to materials, symbolism, and the ways African artists have influenced global modern and contemporary art.
Gary Martin, M.A., is an art historian and educator with extensive experience teaching art history throughout Mendocino County and beyond. His lectures are known for their clarity, visual richness, and ability to make complex material accessible to a broad audience.
