Archie the dog starts his day belting along with the 'Morning Edition' theme music

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

For our next story, we bring you the musical stylings of one of our most loyal listeners.

(SOUNDBITE OF DOG HOWLING TUNEFULLY)

MARTIN: That is a Tibetan Terrier named Archie, howling a tune you already heard today.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

MORNING EDITION music we play at the top of every hour, inspired by BJ Leiderman, of course. And if Archie is listening to his home station, Vermont Public, he's probably singing along.

KIRA BACON: He really gets very passionate about it. You know, he puts his head up and howls to the sky. It's very funny.

MARTIN: Archie's best friend is Kira Bacon, who says she was sipping her morning coffee and listening to the radio when Archie first started to howl.

BACON: So it was a little terrifying, and I went and looked at him. And he seemed fine, not upset. And so I just thought, well, OK. He was howling.

MARTIN: Eventually, as the clock struck 8 a.m. each morning, she made the connection.

BACON: I've come to believe that he's doing it because he wants to. He just seems to really get into it and just put his entire self into it.

(SOUNDBITE OF DOG HOWLING TUNEFULLY)

BACON: And I might make clear that he does not sing along to anything else - only the MORNING EDITION theme song.

FADEL: Take that, All Things Considered. Bacon says it's only the current version of the MORNING EDITION theme that inspires Archie.

BACON: I found a recording of BJ Leiderman performing, with a full orchestra, all of the theme music for the different shows. And I played it for Archie, the MORNING EDITION one, and he did not move a hair. So it's only the way that it is performed on air that he responds to.

FADEL: I guess Archie is just a morning person - or a morning dog.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOWLIN' FOR YOU")

THE BLACK KEYS: (Singing) Baby, I'm howling for you. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
