The City of Point Arena issued an urgent bulletin on Wednesday night regarding the theft of fuel from Coastal Seniors buses. A man with dark hair, a closely trimmed beard, a mustache, and light-colored clothing was caught on camera stealing fuel on two occasions: early in the morning on January 7th and on Christmas Day. These thefts jeopardize the ability of Coastal Seniors to transport residents to medical appointments. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Sheriff at 707-463-4086.
In other city news, the Point Arena City Council elected Anna Dobbins as Mayor and Dan Doyle as Vice Mayor during their December meeting. City Manager Peggy Ducey addressed the city's financial challenges, citing a “huge financial implosion” over the past 18 months due to unchecked spending.
"The good thing is we have Marie Jones on this project," Ducey said, referring to the city planner and consultant known for her work for the City of Fort Bragg and Mendocino County. "She’s very good at what she does, and we will continue to work together. But the community has to be realistic, especially with our enterprise funds."
Jones is leading the Arena Cove Harbor Access and Resiliency Plan, funded by a $485,000 Coastal Conservancy grant. She outlined progress on the project and sought input on allocating $88,000 in unspent funds.
“This project includes engineering and architectural plans for improvements to the pier, floating docks, and other facilities, as well as a campground feasibility study,” Jones said. The plan also involves environmental reviews with multiple agencies, including permitting for pier upgrades.
While the pier improvements have widespread support, residents have expressed mixed feelings about the proposed campground. Jones noted that the Coastal Conservancy prioritizes the campground due to a desire to fund low-cost visitor accommodations.
“I know the campground project is maybe the most controversial,” Jones said. “But from the Conservancy's perspective, that’s the one they’re most intent on having funded.”
Jones shared potential solutions, including a volunteer security role where someone could live on-site in exchange for monitoring the area. Next steps include a market study to gauge demand and revenue potential.
Councilwoman Barbara Burkey suggested adding an access ramp or dock for kayakers and surfers. Jones agreed to explore the idea.
