updated 12/13/2024 with grafs about King Tides
Residents and visitors are urged to brace for a confluence of weather conditions this weekend, with flood advisories in effect for the Navarro and Russian Rivers, the return of the king tides, a coastal flood warning, and a high wind warning issued for Mendocino County.
Flood Advisories for Navarro and Russian Rivers
Heavy rainfall from a series of atmospheric rivers is expected to significantly swell both the Navarro and Russian Rivers. Forecast models indicate the Navarro River could rise to moderate flood stage by Saturday afternoon, potentially inundating low-lying roadways, including portions of Highway 128 near the river. Similarly, the Russian River is predicted to approach minor flood stage, threatening areas near Hopland and downstream communities. Local officials advise residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations.
King Tides
King Tides, which occur when the earth, moon, and sun, align in a straight line, are back. High tides above seven feet are expected through the morning of December 17.
Coastal Flood Warning
From 8 a.m. to noon PST on Saturday, high astronomical tides combined with large surf are expected to cause moderate flooding along the Mendocino Coast. Tide levels at the Point Arena gauge are forecasted to peak between 7.8 and 8.1 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) at 9:02 a.m. Saltwater inundation of up to half a foot above ground level is likely in low-lying areas, including sections of Highway 1, Noyo Harbor, and Arena Cove. Beaches and parking lots may also experience flooding, along with shoreline erosion. Officials recommend avoiding flooded areas and taking measures to protect life and property.
Wind Advisory
Mendocino County will also experience gusty winds from late Friday night through early Saturday. Sustained winds of 20 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected to impact the coastline, ridges, and exposed areas.
