Local mural documents history in historical times

Lauren Sinnott working on a portrait of Anna Morrison Reed, a political candidate, journalist, and suffragette.

June 30, 2020 — Lauren Sinnott knows that history keeps changing, even as it’s being documented. That’s because she’s heading into her third year, painting an epic historical mural on the side of the Ukiah Valley Conference Center on Church Street in Ukiah. Each of the 26 panels of the project, which Sinnott describes as "a career crown jewel," depicts a historical period, starting with the pre-human and ending with a view of the future.

When it gets too cold and rainy in the part of the county that’s the subject of her painting, she heads back to Point Arena. This year, the winter hiatus was extended by shelter in place restrictions, but she got back to work early in June, painting a story that keeps calling for changes to the original plan.

"Ukiah Valley, Past, Present and Future" has been supported by Art Center Ukiah, the Arts Council of Mendocino County, and the California Arts Council.
