May 26, 2020 — As public health measures inform every aspect of everyday life, public education has suffered. Students are lonely, hungry, at risk of violence, and not learning enough. That’s what five members of the Ukiah Unified School District Board contended in an open letter last week. In spite of everyone’s best efforts, they wrote, “School closures and distance learning are catastrophic to children.”
Three of the signatories, Anne Molgaard, Zoey Fernandez, and Megan van Sant, elaborated on their concerns for the children in the community.
