Tour of Georgia Pacific Mill Site With George Reinhardt

June 26, 2019 — With several recent changes at the Georgia Pacific mill site in Fort Bragg, environmentalists see opportunities for more open space, including a wildlife corridor and restored creeks. But they also fear that remaining pollutants in the old mill ponds could leach into the water table as sea levels rise; that harmful chemicals are affecting plants and animals that move along the border of sea and land. The Fort Bragg Headlands Consortium is an environmental group that has launched a mapping project of the area and has long advocated for a thorough cleanup of the mill site, asserting that it is incomplete. The Consortium’s members also want Alder and Maple Creeks to be daylighted, or uncovered and restored. This weekend, the Consortium held a symposium on the future of the headlands, inviting academics, activists, and the former mayor of Richmond to speak about how communities move forward after the companies that once played such a large role leave town. On Saturday afternoon, long-time Consortium member George Reinhardt led a tour of the mill site, starting at the Alder Street entrance to the coastal trail. Join us for a few highlights.
