Blackouts And Evacuations in Mendocino and Lake Counties

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story was illustrated by a picture that was used without permission and inadvertently attributed to Mendocino Complex rather than The Mendocino Voice, an online news service that is covering the Mendocino Complex fires. We have replaced the picture on our website and on Facebook, where our report was widely shared. We regret the misunderstanding, and wish The Mendocino Voice the best in its ongoing coverage of this dangerous fire emergency in Lake and Mendocino counties.

Sunday 29 July 2018 -- More than 50,000 Mendocino and Lake County residents are without power today. The Ranch fire struck two transmission lines near Upper Lake this afteroon. According to PG&E, heavy smoke may be another culprit affecting other transmission lines. Crews are working to assess the outages and make repairs. There is currently no estimate for when power will be fully restored.

The fire jumped Highway 20 this afternoon at mile marker 41.69 in Mendocino County, approximately 9 miles east of Ukiah, and about 3 miles from the Mendocino / Lake County line.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's office issued an evacuation warning for the Pine Avenue of Potter Valley. It is north of Burris Lane, east of Eastside Potter Valley Road, south of 10511 Eastside Potter Valley Road and west of the Lake-Mendocino County Line.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office the fast moving River fire poses an imminent threat to the entire city of Lakeport and surrounding areas. A Mandatory Evacuation order is in place there that includes all residents north of Highland Springs/Big Valley Road and South of 20th Street.

Highway 20 has been closed due to the Ranch fire.
