Ukiah Man Convicted For Manslaughter In The 2016 Killing Of Young Homeless Man

Press Democrat

A Mendocino County Superior Court jury on Friday, May 11, 2018 found 63 year-old Steven Patrick Ryan of Ukiah, guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the late 2016 killing of the young man, 20-year old De'Shaun Patrick Davis.

According to a press release issued by Mike Geniella of the District Attorney's Office, the jury also found true the special allegation the defendant personally used a firearm to cause the unlawful death of Davis.

The crime occurred just before noon on November 21, 2016 near the Oak Manor area of Ukiah. According to court testimony in 2017, Davis was pushing a bicycle up the road near Ryan's rental home on a vineyard property when Ryan confronted him over trespassing and an argument ensued. A witness told deputies she saw Davis drop to his knees, hold his hands up, and heard him say “I give up,” after Ryan fired the first shot. Then, two additional shots were fired. One hit the defendants hand and the fatal shot hit his chest.

Friday's verdict carries a possible sentence of up to 21 years in state prison. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 15 at 9 am at the Ukiah courthouse.
