Try It And See: The Story Behind Mushroom Dyes
Try It And See: The Story Behind Mushroom Dyes
Mushrooms and fungi are now widely used as a source for natural dyes. This film provides a behind-the-scenes look into the early history of mushroom dyes, with Dorothy Beebee, artist and pioneer in the field. It reveals the excitement of discovery, the trials of publication, and her hopes for the future of mushroom dyes.
Film screening in conjunction with the exhibit, MUSHROOMS & COLOR, works by contemporary artists and makers, to be held at the Mendocino Art Center February 14 – March 8, 2026.
Fiber artist Dorothy Beebee worked closely with Miriam C. Rice to unlock the full spectrum of color from mushrooms. Her scientific illustrations of fungi grace each of Miriam’s books on dyeing with mushrooms.
