March 9th Ukiah Contra Dance
March 9th Ukiah Contra Dance
The Ukiah Contra Dance Group is holding a public dance on Saturday March 9th starting at 7:00pm in the Ukiah Methodist Church Social Hall, 205 N Bush St, Ukiah. Except during the pandemic, these dances had been held monthly for 30+ years.
Contra dance is a form of American folk dance. It bears some resemblance to Square Dancing, but has some significant differences; Contra dance is done in lines rather than in a 4-couple square. Many of the terms are the same in both Contra and Square dancing, so if you remember any of the terms from old school days or previous occasions you’re already halfway there. No experience is necessary because all dances are taught and no partner is needed because the tradition is to change partners for each dance.
Contra Dancing is appropriate for all ages. All the dances are done to live music, and in fact, that is also the tradition across the country.
On March 9th, live music will be provided by THE CONTRARIANS: Corwin Zekely and Will Wheeler from the Mendocino Coast. All dances will be taught by Mike Fynan. There will be a free class for beginners at 6:30 pm. .
Masks optional.
Donations of non-perishable food for the Ukiah Food Bank are welcome.
