August 26, 2020 — The American Postal Workers Union called for a national day of action yesterday, asking supporters to join or organize a Save the Post Office event at local branches. The movement is demanding at least $25 billion for the post office and an immediate reversal of current policies that are slowing down mail delivery, like cutting overtime and removing and dismantling sorting machines.

A few of the most fervent local supporters braved the smoke yesterday morning to gather outside the Ukiah office with signs and masks and advice about voting early by mail. Passing motorists honked, a postal worker handed out water, and a small dog howled hoarsely. One woman offered to show up later and play the guitar, but the smoke and the heat intensified, and the group dispersed by about 12:30.

Terry Poplawski retired from the post office and is a longtime union organizer. He stood in the shade of an oak tree and talked about how popular the post office has gotten since it’s come under attack.
