AAUW Sponsors Probing Talk On Racism

January 18, 2019 --  The American Association of University Women sponsored a recent talk about some of the most current thinking on racial tensions in our society: "Institutional Racism and Micro-aggressions Toward People of Color."

Several dozen people took refuge from a blustery winter night at the Saturday Afternoon Club, to hear professional CPA Michelle Maxwell and Dr. Audrey Jade cover topics like white fragility and whose perspective really counts when it comes to assessing encounters that are charged with often-times unconscious racial bias.

We'll hear a few highlights from that discussion, then switch gears and listen to Ukiah City Councilman Juan Orozco talk about the Spanish-language newspaper, Periodico Al Punto. He'll talk about his contribution, and the services this newspaper provides to the community, from news about the schools to legislative updates. Jackie Orozco, who holds a degree in communications and was a teacher for sixteen years in her native country of Mexico, is the editor of Al Punto.
