RCS Planning More Services for Homeless Clients

1045 South State Street in Ukiah, where Redwood Community Services plans to open a resource center next month.

July 15, 2019 — The emergency homeless shelter on South State Street in Ukiah is typically only open for the winter months, but Redwood Community Services, the non-profit organization that operates the facility, has applied for a permit to keep it open year-round. RCS also plans to open a day shelter, or resource center, on the same site in August, where clients can follow up on plans to find housing and get access to other services.

KZYX caught up with Sage Wolf, Program Manager for Housing and Homelessness at Redwood Community Services, to find out more. Wolf said there is still a shortfall in funds to keep the nighttime shelter open past June of this fiscal year (calendar year June 2020), but that with the opening of the day resource center, RCS hopes to help more people find permanent housing. About 15% of the 244 guests who used the shelter last year found housing, though half a dozen former guests who got a place at Willow Terrace on Gobbi Street in Ukiah were not included in the data.

There will be an open house at the resource center, which has been named Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center, at 1045 South State Street in Ukiah on Tuesday, July 30, from 3-6pm.
