Proactive Planning for the Surge: Mendo Coronavirus Update 4-7

April 7, 2020--Dr. Drew Colfax is joined by his colleague Dr. JJ Allende, who works in the ICU at Ukiah Adventist Hospital for the day's local coronavirus update. There are over 400,000 case of COVID-19 nationwide, while California's infection rate has slowed to single digits, increasing at 7% per day down from 16% last week. In the meantime, Ukiah Adventist Health is making the most of the seeming reprieve in Mendocino County, refitting the old ICU and Emergency Room to house COVID-19 patients, and aquiring 20 more ventilators to raise local capability to care for critically ill community members. Dr. Allende describes an evolving understanding of how to best care for those with the disease, as health professionals in other parts of the country begin to delay ventilator use and opt for oxygen and other practices striving for better outcomes.
