Local Peace Activist John Lewallen Holds Anti-Nuclear Seminar At United Nations

Next year the United Nations will hold a summit to review the international Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons also known as NPT. The Treaty is observed by 190 countries, and is the foundation of global nuclear disarmament. Its objectives are to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, to promote cooperation around peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to move towards global nuclear disarmament.

In preparation for next years summit, the UN has held three preparatory committee sessions to consider options and make reccommendations for the big summit next spring. John Lewallan and his wife Barbara traveled from Mendocino County to New York City to hold seminar on nuclear risk reduction at the final preparatory committee session. Last week I visited John at his home in Philo and asked him about his trip to the UN and his life as an anti-nuclear activist.
