Learning Garden Demonstrates Firesafe Plantings

Student Molly Gardenhire stands underneath the arbor she built at the entrance to the learning garden.

October 14, 2019 — The Phoenix Project at Mendocino College is a multi disciplinary creative effort to make sense of the firestorms that have affected the lives of so many people in the community. Last week, as the county scrambled to prepare for a power shutoff intended to prevent more fires, arts and horitculture student Molly Gardenhire took KZYX on a tour of a garden that combines her two disciplines and some of the practices advocated by local firesafe councils. The garden is a small oasis in the parking lot, just behind the bus stop in a partly cleared grove of scrubby little trees that muffle the sounds of traffic.
