Gyms and fitness centers reopening in Phase III

People taking advantage of the outdoor pool at the Ukiah Valley Athletic Club, a few days into Phase III.

June 16, 2020 — Gyms and fitness studios have been upping their game when it comes to sanitation and social distancing protocols, in preparation for an order allowing them to reopen. That order came down at 3:00 Friday afternoon, and by 8:00 the next morning, people were already in the pool at the Ukiah Valley Athletic Club.

Late Sunday night, Erin Paulson, the owner of Radiant Yoga Ukiah, was doing some last minute cleaning after setting up a video system so instructors could teach classes to students on site as well as from a distance. Her first class after the shutdown was at 5:00 Monday morning. Paulson said the shutdown cost her thousands of dollars, and she’ll have to drop to about 25% capacity. Doing everything online was a huge expensive hassle, but it may have saved her business.

Just a few blocks away, Tracy and Ferdinance Theriot opened Crossfit Firefly in August. They had only been operating for six months before being forced to shut down for three. On Friday afternoon, the rollup door on the newly remodeled building was letting in as much air as possible. Individual workout spaces were taped out on the ground, and there was hand sanitizer everywhere. They’ve also been doing online classes, but they think the structured nature of the in-person workouts is an advantage to staying safe.

For everyone, the anticipation of reopening is tempered with uncertainty.
