Bill To Fund State's Deteriorating Transporation Infrastructure Advances to Senate Floor

A six billion dollar funding plan to improve California's crumbling roads and highways passed another hurdle Wednesday, the bill, SB 1, was approved by the Senate Governance & Finance Committee. The legislation will be taken up for a vote on the Senate floor in the coming weeks. SB 1 is co-authored by North Coast senator Mike McGuire. In a press release issued by his office Wednesday, McGuire said “we have a transportation funding crisis in California – our roads, highways and bridges are crumbling because our state has failed to invest in our transportation infrastructure – and tens of millions of California commuters, businesses and travelers are literally paying the price for our lack of action.”

He added SB 1 is the big investment needed to tackle this crisis.

According to McGuire, 87% of California’s roads rated in fair or poor condition, and an estimated statewide road maintenance backlog over the next decade amounts to a cost of $132 billion dollars.

SB 1 aims to create a sustainable funding source to fix the state’s deteriorating transportation infrastructure.

Under this funding plan, Mendocino county would receive $8,201,676 annually.

Lake county: $5,502,360, and Humboldt county: $11,145,520.
