During KZYX pledge drives, we ask listeners to contribute $60 a year — just $1.15 a week — to support NPR and local news, as well as the infrastructure needed to provide round-the-clock programming from four studios across the county. These studios are available to the community at no cost, along with free training in broadcast skills.
What else can you get for $1.15 a week?
- In food: That’s 72 cents less than a single organic yellow onion at Safeway, 35 cents less than Cinco de Mayo pastries on sale at Harvest Market, and $2.14 less than a can of Amy’s Organic Refried Beans (also on sale).
- In energy: It equals about 2.44 kilowatt-hours at off-peak rates — enough to run an electric oven for an hour or your air conditioner for 30 minutes to three hours.
- In streaming: It’s $3.99 less than a Netflix subscription, $6.39 less than Disney+ with Hulu, and a whopping $78.39 less than YouTube TV.
- In gas: It’s about a quarter of a tank.
KZYX exists because our community believes in the value we provide. As your news director, I believe the blend of public and community radio helps knit us together. It gives us a shared playlist — from rap to rhythm and blues — and a shared set of facts on local, state, national and international issues. It offers a forum for public discussion.
But it requires your participation. While you can replace the content, where else will you find the same sense of community once it’s gone?
