Authorities are investigating an incident captured in a video circulating on social media, where an unknown individual threw a lit explosive device under a cart that was parked next to a tent with an unhoused woman in Fort Bragg, Calif. The video, which surfaced on January 4, 2025, depicts the firework detonating under the cart, followed by screams from the victim in the tent.

The Fort Bragg Police Department launched an investigation after being alerted to the footage by a member of the local media. The story was first reported by mendocinocoast.news. Officers reviewed the video and interviewed witnesses who provided critical information about its origin.

The investigation revealed that the incident occurred in July 2024 within city limits but was not reported by the victim at the time. Police were able to identify the location where the video was filmed, the victim, and a potential suspect.

On January 5, 2025, officers contacted the victim, an elderly individual, who confirmed the details of the assault. Statements were also obtained from a suspect. A day later, officers executed warrants on a social media account linked to the video and a residence associated with the suspect in Mendocino County. Authorities are now analyzing digital evidence, including a recovered cellphone, to identify additional individuals involved in the crime.

“The act in the video committed against a member of our community is deplorable,” said Chief Neil Cervenka. “The Fort Bragg Police Department is dedicated to protecting all of our community members, especially those who are most vulnerable. This wasn’t a joke or a prank. It was an assault with an explosive device.”

The police department is pursuing prosecution for the crime and is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Officer Beak can be reached at (707) 964-2800 ext. 224 or by email at rbeak@fortbragg.com.
