SEIU Local 1021 Field Rep Patrick Hickey organizing a rally outside the Board of Supervisors chambers as union members vote on whether or not they should strike.
After weeks of rallying with signs and T-shirts reading, “Will strike if provoked,” one of the county’s largest labor unions has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.
SEIU Local 1021 represents about 75% of county government workers, over 800 employees. They do not represent sheriff’s deputies, probation officers, attorneys, and management. Union and county negotiators have been at an impasse without a contract for months.
On Friday night, over 90% of the membership voted to allow negotiating teams to call a strike if the two sides can’t agree on terms.
