Wiyot Tribal Chair Theodore Hernandez addresses the crowd at the Land Back symposium at Cal Poly Humboldt.

The Land Back movement is gaining traction, as Native American tribes develop strategies to reclaim unceded properties for their own purposes, including stewardship of the land.

At a day-long symposium on Land Back at Cal Poly Humboldt last week, panelists discussed easements and land trusts, the roles of universities and the state, and how to manage the funding and legal aspects.

The event was co-sponsored by the Native American Studies Department and Save California Salmon, an organization that promotes Indigenous water rights and traditional ecological knowledge.
