KZYX Planning Committee Meeting

Discussion about events to celebrate the station's 30th anniversary, including a main event in October, 2019, a Jazz concert at Sequoia Room in Ft. Bragg in May, and several smaller events in spring, summer, and fall. 

An initial Strategic Plan Outline was created to present to the Board.  It is below.

SECTIONS

·     Expand KZYX Community News 

o  Increased broadcast time (from 8.5 minutes to 30 minutes per day) 

o  Increase news staff to full-time news director and 2-3 news staff (from 1.2 FTE staff to up to 3-4 FTE (from current annual cost of $50,000 to $125,000 to $150,000 salary budget)

·     Strengthening and Hardening Infrastructure

o  Replace equipment to create redundancy in equipment to permit multiple pathways to get signal to the towers ($750,000 to $1.5 million one time cost) 

o  Move main station to Ukiah. (Remodel of building: $200,000 one-time cost)

§ Reducing station vulnerability, increasing resiliency, and increasing collaboration possibilities.

o  Strengthen signal to Lake County

o  Strengthen signal to Mendocino Coast

o  Strengthen signal to Round Valley

·     Collaborate with local and state emergency services 

o  Cal Fire (savings of $60,000)

o  Local fire chiefs

o  County sheriff/county EOS

§ Add staff: Production manager (1 FTE, annual cost $45,000)

 

·     Outreach into different communities - geographic & constituencies 

o  Rural areas and towns

o  Young people, rural poor, Latinos, Native Americans, seniors 

o  Nonprofit organizations

o  Relevant programming for various demographics and geographic areas

o  Increased community events appealing to various demographics

o  Multimedia strategy including electronic newsletter, digital archive, podcasts, social media

o  Added staff: Outreach coordinator (1 FTE, annual cost $45,000)

 

·     Strengthen our broadcast footprint

o   Better reception in Lake County

o   Better reception on Mendocino Coast

§ Merge with or acquire other rural stations 

§ Add staff: operations manager (1 FTE, annual cost $45,000)

 

·     Improve operational processes 

o  Handling finances/budget, 

o  Revising bylaws, policies, station manual ($250 one-time cost)

o  Staff availability during emergencies

Notes:

To expand this to a strategic plan with some teeth, we will want to develop step-by-step action plans for the fulfillment of each bullet point. The process by which we do this should include staff, board, programmers, and community.
