Results of the News Survey

We asked a few questions about Democracy Now, All things Considered and how we might rearrange our news schedule.  Here are the results of the survey.

As as result (though not entirely because of it), we will be changing Democracy Now! back to its original 4 PM time slot.  We will not trade All things Considered for the BBC at that hour.  Free Speech Radio News will move to 6:30 PM.  The programs currently running at 4:30 and 6:30 will move to other times.  Stay tuned for details.  The change should occur in the third week of September.  Thanks to everyone who participated.

The music starts at 4:00 PM with a kanikapila – a Hawaiian style back-yard jam featuring many of the evening’s performers in various musical configurations.  At 5:00 PM, Mendocino County’s own Hui Arago takes the stage featuring renowned steel guitarist Peter Childs and hula by Phyllis O’Dea. Then, you are in for a rare musical treat not often heard outside the islands, as Kevin Brown, Robin Mahealani Kneubuhl and Kalae Miles take the stage for the remainder of the evening. We expect the music & hula will go until dark.

Our thanks to the Kona Brewing Company for their generous support.

A Preview of Next Year's Budget - Updated July 9

Read the Fiscal Year 2011 Budget and Narrative.

The 2010 fiscal year ended on June 30.  The MCPB Board of Directors at their meeting on July 12 will vote on the 2011 budget.  Unlike this year when we had to make a lot of cuts as well as earn much more income, it looks like we won't have to do so much cutting provided we earn still more income in 2011.

The main change proposed for the upcoming fiscal year is to convert the membership coordinator position to full time.  Currently this is a part time position.  In order for us to grow our membership and to fulfill all of the detailed processes required for accurate and timely membership administration, we really need this to be a full time position.

Otherwise we aren't planning any big changes - just need to keep everything working in good shape and to pay the bills and the back debts.

Keeping the Show on the Road: One-Day Pledge Drives Reaches Our $20K Goal!

Keeping the Show on the Road

Our goal was $20K and When we counted it all up including what came through the mail after the drive we did indeed reach our goal!  Thanks to everyone who helps us keep this show on the road.  The end of the fiscal year is coming right up and we'll soon tally how this year went.  This gives it such a strong finish.  It looks like we are going to get very close to our target annual income total of $560K.  That's great and it shows that we - all of us - can sustain the station closer to where our income needs to be.  This has been a much better year than the previous few and you, the listeners, are the difference.  I think you all know by now though that in order for this show to stay on the road we have to fundraise pretty much all the time.  We can't let up at all or we'll fall right back.  But for now, thank you so much and ...onward!

General Manager's Annual Report to the members 2010

Every year MCPB has an annual membership meeting and party where the newly-elected board members are seated, new officers chosen by the board, the General Manager delivers an annual report and the attendees enjoy each other's company with a potluck party.  This year we did it on a gorgeous Sunday in Ukiah at the Saturday Afternoon Club.  If you attended, thanks for coming and if you didn't we hope to see you next year.  This event is a fun time and a great chance to chat directly with the KZYX staff and board.  Here are the notes that the GM used for the annual Report...

The Wailin' Jennys at Cotton Auditorium

Thanks to the more than 500 people who attended the Wailin' Jennys-Blushin' Roulettes concert March 7 in Fort Bragg.  It was a magical night of gorgeous singing.  We hope we can have them back again!  Our thanks also to Mendo Bistro, Corners of the Mouth, The Harbor Lite Lodge, T.E. Cakes and Thanksgiving Coffee for their generous donations.  The Jennys were sold out of their most recent live CD , which is a similar show to the one at Cotton, so here is a link to buy a copy from Red House Records .

The January 2010 GM Report to the Board
The General manager's January 2010 Report to the Board of Directors is online with revised financials.  We had a good first half of the year.  We still owe a lot of money but if the past two quarters indicate any sort of a trend, then we are moving in the right direction.

In Memory of Andrea Jacobson

 Andrea Jacobson (1944-2010)

Terminal Whimsy show-host Andrea Jacobson was lost to cancer on January 7th.  Andrea always said her show wasn't about music, but about ideas.    One show, called 'twinkling pianos,"  was dedicated to piano pieces that featured arpeggios.  Another show featured acoustic guitar solos by musicians with "smiles in their fingers."

Andrea was born in New Jersey in 1944.  She was a disciplined scholar as well as a creative artist.  She won a full scholarship to Cornell University, where she got her masters degree in Home Economics and Design.

Andrea was involved in many different kinds of activities.  She was a valued player on the 4-person bocce ball team, called Fore Play, of course.  She has friends from her stay at Pomo Tierra Ranch in Yorkville.  Andrea had a graphics business, Curlymind Productions, which featured her intricate and 'curly' designs.  In the 70's she was part owner of the Philo Cafe, and had another business in Ukiah, the Sewing Corner.  Andrea taught math in the ROP program at Ukiah High and was treasurer of her teachers' union, the Mendocino County Federation of School Employees.  In her last days, she helped start up the new "Lovin' Blooms" nursery in Anderson Valley.  Andrea is deeply missed by her singing cohorts, the "Bronnettes," as well as her many colleagues at KZYX-Z.

One other note:  It was Andrea's pledge and gift of $10,000 that allowed us to reach our goal at the last pledge drive.  So, along with our love comes our deepest gratitude.
