Jimi Hendrix's music is electric in every sense of the word. Brazen, declamatory, full of teeth-chattering squalls, riffs, and runs, it manages to be both ecstatic and accurate at the same time. A talented songwriter as well, Hendrix's world is populated with apocalyptic and revelatory soundscapes and lyrics. While no one works in a vacuum—Hendrix's early influences include 50s musician Eddie Cochran and the 60s doo-wop guitar rhythms of soul artist Curtis Mayfield—Hendrix pushed these influences  in a direction so radical and new that no one had heard their likes before. He utterly changed the direction of rock and roll, celebrating the expressive power of the electric guitar and pushing guitar solos into the forefront for the rest of the decade (he died in 1970). This show will pay tribute to Hendrix's genius, explore his forebears and a few of his many followers. We'll hear lesser-known cuts in addition to the classics, early cuts, live tracks, and even an acoustic set that highlights his reflective, lyrical side.
