WILDOAK LIVING Mon Sep 2 at 9am: BEREAVEMENT, COMPASSION, HAPPINESS
When we experience the death of a beloved person or animal companion or the end of a relationship, or when we anticipate the "end of the world as we know it" that might result from climate change, we are faced with intense, bewildering and sometimes overwhelming challenges, emotions and decisions.
In this program, I explore the concepts of bereavement, compassion and happiness. I talk with Dick Lumaghi, the Bereavement Coordinator for Hospice of Ukiah. They are offering an eight week Grief Support Group beginning Sep. 12th.
I will share are a brief TED Talk by Buddhist roshi Joan Halifax, who works with people at the last stage of life (in hospice and on death row). She shares what she's learned about compassion in the face of death and dying, and a deep insight into the nature of empathy. One of the questions she asks is: "If compassion is so good for us, why don't we train our children in compassion?"
Time permitting, I will also share a TED talk about the Habits of Happiness by biochemist turned Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, who says we can train our minds in habits of well-being, to generate a true sense of serenity and fulfillment.
