July 15 Farm and Garden interview with Jesse Tanning of Inland Ranch Organics
Here is the link to listen to the show, Bill Taylor interviewing Jesse Tanning of Inland Ranch Organics for most of the show (the last 14 minutes were a short preview of the Not So Simple Living Fair with Sophia Bates):
For me the take-home messages were: to battle the most tenacious pests, do more than you are already doing to make the growing conditions (soil etc) excellent for the crop. Also, to grow the best onions, start them now (July) or August at the latest and transplant in the winter. Use clean soil as they sprout very slowly and weeds will overwhelm them. Lastly, get to know local long-time growers to get the best seed. Sometimes it takes years before they will share it with you.
